The Hidden Cost of Out-of-Stock Shelf Slots

A gap on the shelf is a sale that never gets recorded anywhere — it doesn’t show up as a transaction, a return, or a complaint.

By Proglint Architecture TeamAI & Vision Engineering

Most retail loss-tracking systems are built to catch things that leave a record: a return, a void, a discrepancy in inventory counts. An out-of-stock shelf slot leaves no such record — a customer who wanted the item simply doesn't buy it, and nothing downstream reflects the lost sale.

Periodic manual shelf walks catch some gaps, but only at the moment the walk happens, on whatever cadence staffing allows — typically once or twice a shift on high-traffic aisles.

Continuous shelf monitoring closes that gap by treating an empty slot as an event the moment it's visually detected, routing a replenishment alert to staff instead of waiting for the next scheduled walk to notice it.
