The Limits of Manual Visual Inspection on the Production Line
Human inspectors are excellent at judgment and terrible at sustained, repetitive attention. Zero-touch inspection targets the second problem, not the first.
Manual visual inspection has an honest limitation that has nothing to do with skill: sustained attention on a repetitive task degrades over a shift. An inspector checking hundreds of near-identical components an hour will, on average, miss more defects toward the end of a long run than at the start.
This isn't a training problem — it's a human-attention problem, and it shows up as inconsistent inspection accuracy shift-to-shift and inspector-to-inspector, which is difficult to quantify without a parallel automated baseline.
Zero-touch inspection pipelines, like Proglint's SPDR unit, run continuously on every unit passing a fixed inspection point, extracting the same attributes — identity, dimensions, color, component presence — with the same criteria every time. The inspector's judgment is still valuable for ambiguous cases; the machine's job is to make sure fatigue never lets an obvious defect through.
