Where Self-Checkout Shrink Actually Comes From
Ticket switching, non-scanned items, and bottom-of-basket misses are three distinct failure modes — and they need three distinct detections.
Self-checkout shrink is often treated as a single problem with a single fix, usually more staff oversight. In practice it's several distinct behaviors, each with a different visual signature.
Non-scanned items pass the scan plane without a corresponding barcode read. Ticket switching pairs a low-price barcode with a higher-value item. Bottom-of-basket misses are items left in the cart that never reach the scan plane at all. Treating all three as one metric makes it hard to know which intervention is actually working.
Proglint's self-checkout loss prevention capability detects each failure mode separately — non-scanned items, ticket/barcode switching, and BOB verification — so the response (a polite on-screen prompt, an attendant alert, a flagged review) can match the specific behavior instead of a blanket approach.
